Best of Makeup 2018

Last year was an insanely great one for makeup lovers! Between the much-needed expansion in foundation shades, to the tons of new palettes released, to some of the best collaborations, it was an amazing (and expensive!) year for everyone invested in the beauty industry. There has been so much makeup to try out and review that it can be a little overwhelming, but there is truly a product for everyone nowadays!

Personally, I have grown a lot in the last year with makeup. A year ago I never thought I would have a beauty blog, but now here I am! I spent the last half of 2018 trying to capture my creativity through eye looks, and teaching others about eye makeup and its application. I’ve learned a lot about makeup and what I love about it in the last year, which I reflected on in my previous post, “Why Do I Love Makeup?” I’ve gotten more confident in trying crazy colors on my eyes, as well as in doing makeup on other people. Last year was one to remember and appreciate, so to give a shoutout to 2018 I collected my ten favorite beauty products that I used all year. These are the staples in my makeup collection, the ones I can’t live without, and the products you’ll probably recognize from previous posts of mine!

1. Real Techniques Beauty Sponge

The most important parts of makeup application are the tools you use, so my first favorite product is obviously going to include my #1s. I’m obsessed with the Real Techniques Beauty Sponge because it makes foundation and concealer blend into your skin so effortlessly and naturally, without leaving streaks or patches. You can also use your sponge and a little loose powder to set your face, which is what I do most days to avoid shininess. In addition to this amazing little sponge, I’ve also been obsessed with the Real Techniques face brushes and decided they deserve an honorable mention.

2. Maybelline Superstay Foundation

I used this foundation for the majority of 2018 and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! It absolutely covers everything but still manages to look like real skin. I really believe this foundation is magic in a bottle and I’d recommend everyone to try it out! You can put a little bit onto your sponge and make it look super natural, but then add a little more and you have a true full-coverage foundation. This formula lives up to its name and it’s definitely one of the best drugstore foundations I’ve tried.

3. ColourPop Highlighter in “Flexitarian”

Just from glancing at the picture of this highlighter, I’m sure you can see how bright and shimmery this product is. I use this on my inner corner almost every time I do my eye makeup and I don’t think I’ll ever stop! It’s super easy to apply and blend into your skin as a face highlighter too. I’ve found that you can use a brush for a more natural highlight, but use your finger to get some crazy shimmer on your cheekbones. And for the price, this product just can’t be beat!

4. Morphe Setting Spray

I’ve been searching for the perfect setting spray since I started doing my makeup, but could never find one that was exactly what I wanted. Most setting sprays are harsh and leave water marks on your face, but this one will never do that. It comes in an aerosol can so that the product sprays your face evenly and gently, and it makes your makeup last forever!

5. Jaclyn Hill Palette by Morphe

It’s no secret that this palette is the most-used in my collection. You can tell just by looking at it that I use it like crazy! It’s the perfect palette for any type of look, whether you want a very neutral look or a pop of color. The shadows are extremely easy to blend and the shimmers are super pigmented. If you haven’t already tried this one out, I recommend you get around to purchasing it in 2019!

6. 25C Palette by Morphe

I might have a slight obsession with Morphe eyeshadows, but I’m sure that’s nothing new to you! I recently fell in love with this palette for it’s brown tones, but also found that I can’t stay away from the pops of color. I’m a huge fan of warm-toned eyeshadows in my everyday life and this palette catered to my needs big time. It has become one of my most-used, up there with the Jaclyn Hill palette.

7. Zulu Palette by Juvia’s Place

This. Palette. Wow! I hadn’t used many bright colors before I purchased this, but once I bought it I was drawn into the world of crazy eyeshadow looks. Almost every time I create a look incorporating some kind of crazy color, you can be sure that this palette was involved. I give all the credit to this palette for sparking my interest in colorful looks and I’m so happy that I found it!

8. Stila Magnificent Metals

It’s no question that these were the biggest trend of 2018. I’m not sure if I could name more than a few people in my life who haven’t tried these, and everyone who has loves them! With so many different color choices and varying levels of glitteriness, you just can’t stay away from these guys! Every time I want to do a fun look for going out, I pop one of these onto my lid and I’m ready to go. This is another one of those products that you just have to try; I promise you’ll love them!

9. NYX Glitters

Alright, so I’m obviously a glitter-addict. When I have a big event to go to, like a formal, I reach for these loose glitters. They’re beautiful and extremely easy to apply, and they last for the entire night. These take a little bit more effort and focus than the Stila Magnificent Metals, but they’re definitely worth it when the look is complete!

10. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Colors

I’ve tried a decent amount of lip products this year, but I still go back to the same one. The formula and color selection of these liquid lips are hard to beat, and they’re super affordable! I’ve been using these for years, but I really started to try tons of different shades throughout 2018. These are some of the best lipsticks on the market right now and I can’t wait to try even more colors!

This concludes my favorite products from 2018 and trust me when I recommend every single one of these. I tried out a lot of different products throughout the year, but these are the ones that I knew I couldn’t leave out. I’m so excited to try new products and improve my skills in the upcoming year, and to hopefully continue to teach all of you a little something about makeup. Thank you for supporting my blog in 2018, and thanks in advance for continuing to read and support in 2019! It’s going to be a great year for makeup!

Palette Review: Jaclyn Hill Vault Collection by Morphe

If you’ve followed me on Instagram (which you should! @natplewamakeup), then you’ve probably seen these two looks! I recently got the Jaclyn Hill Vault Collection and decided to try out a couple different looks to give you a little review on it! There are so many different looks you can achieve with these four palettes, but today I’m going to show you how I used three of them.

The first look I created is this smokey forest green eye look. I used Dark Magic for this one and it was super easy! As always, I used Tarte Shape Tape as my base then set it with a translucent powder. I started the eyeshadow with a transition color, using “SHHH,” then began to blend “Potion” into the crease along with it. I deepened the outer corner with “Inside Job,” then finally added a little bit of “Temptress” to make it even darker. For the shimmery lid color I threw on the color “Power Cut.” I repeated all of these steps on the lower lash line and made sure to smoke it out. Since there wasn’t a color in this palette that I wanted to use on the inner corner, I used the ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in “Here We Go Again.” I think the yellow adds a pop of light to the eye look and I’m very happy with how it finished the look off!

Now using the Bling Boss palette, I started with “Hush Hush” as my transition color, making sure to bring it high up on my eye. I knew I wanted to do something different, so I decided to try a spotlight eyeshadow look with these fun colors! On both the inner and outer thirds of my eye, I started adding “Rockstar,” then darkened it with “Mystic.” For the spotlight part of my eye, I mixed “Ballsy” with “Glitz & Glam” and the color turned out beautiful! I also wanted to try the Armed & Gorgeous palette, so I used the shimmery white, “VIP,” on my inner corner. I also threw a little bit of glitter onto the center of my lid to make it even more bold, and I used ColourPop’s Supernova Shadow in “From the Valley” to do that. It took a lot of blending and reapplying shadow to achieve this look, but I love how it turned out in the end!

Overall, I think these palettes are absolutely gorgeous! You can really accomplish any look you want with all the different colors you get. I will admit, these were a little bit hard to blend at times, but I think the looks turned out so pretty! I would wear either one of these out and I would recommend trying out these palettes to anyone who wants to experiment with different colors!

If you want any more advice on how to apply eyeshadow with the same techniques and brushes I use, definitely check out my previous post on the basics of how I do my eye makeup.  I’d also recommend checking out my post about dramatic eye makeup and different techniques I use for that, especially if you want to amp up your look a little bit! These looks would so so fun if you use the glitters I posted about! Let me know if you try these looks or these palettes on your own; I would love to get your feedback!

Top Picks for August

I’ve been really loving a lot of drugstore products this month, which is awesome because all of my favorites are super affordable! Since I am the definition of a broke college student, I try to stay away from using a ton of high-end products and I only buy pricey makeup when it’s something I love. I think drugstore makeup has improved so much over time and I’m so happy that so many different products work for me!

Starting off with skincare, I’ve been loving the Cetaphil Facial Cleanser when I wash my face lately. I typically break out a lot when I’m back at school because of the stress and very little sleep, but this stuff has kept my skin so clear! I’ve only been using it for a little over a month, but I’ve noticed that my skin looks a million times better than it did last year. It’s very light on my skin and I can feel that it’s cleansing my face. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a new cleanser!

Next is base makeup. I don’t usually switch up my base too often, but I’ve been trying out a few new products in the last month or so. My ultimate favorite foundation right now is the Maybelline Superstay Full Coverage Foundation. They weren’t lying when they said full coverage, let me tell you! It covers everything, including my super red-toned skin, and makes full-coverage look natural. Not only does it look beautiful when you first apply it, but it also lasts all day. I used to work long hours at a restaurant, where I would be running around for hours at a time, and I would still get compliments on my complexion at the end of my shift. This stuff is magic in a bottle!

Finally, I have the eye makeup. Obviously, this is my favorite part of doing my makeup, so I’ve tried out a ton of new products to find my favorites. Starting with some eyeshadow, I’ve been so obsessed with the 35O2 palette by Morphe. This is a warm-toned palette with mostly neutral colors, but it also has a few pops of red and orange. I’ve been loving warmer looks lately, and this has been my go-to all month! I did a short review of this palette a while ago, which you can read here. It’s an absolutely beautiful palette and you can create so many different looks with it!

I’ve also been using a Maybelline mascara and it’s my new favorite. The Colossal Mascara is amazing and I get a ton of compliments on my eyelashes every time I use it! The brush is easy to use, it makes my lashes look so long, and it’s ridiculously affordable! I use this mascara in the shade “glam brown” because I like it to look a little softer to compliment my fair skin and hair. I could rave about this mascara all day, but I’m sure you’ve already heard about how awesome Maybelline mascaras are!

These are all my favorite beauty products for the month of August! I love so many different products, so picking a few favorites was really hard for me. These are just the ones that I’ve been reaching for every single day and that I know others will love too. If you’ve tried any of these products, let me know what you think of them!

Before I end this post, I just wanted to update everyone really quick. It’s been a crazy first few weeks of the semester, so I haven’t had as much time to work on blog posts as I would like. I’m still working on a lot of different posts, though, and I’m excited to be able to share them with all of you. I have some more eyeshadow tutorials that I’m really excited for you to see, some more palette reviews, and a few more colorful eye looks that you’ll love! Everything’s coming soon and I’m working as hard as I can to make them absolutely perfect! Thanks again for continuing to read my blog and supporting me!

Palette Review: Mar by ColourPop

Before I tried the Mar palette, I had never tried a ColourPop eyeshadow palette or any of their pressed eyeshadows. I’ve heard tons of good things about their pressed shadows, but I had only ever tried their liquid lipsticks and their Super Shock Shadows. Mar was the new palette on the market and I was so excited to try it out! I normally go for warm-tones because they’re a lot more wearable, but I decided to step out of my comfort zone and get a palette that had a lot of blue and gold tones. This is the look that I came up with!

Mar palette & Appy lipstick

When I first saw the palette in person, I realized that there are only 3 matte shades: a peach (Sorbet), a dark brown (Top Down), and a royal blue (Detour). While this might seem limiting at first glance, I realized how many possibilities there are with only these mattes!

I started the look by blending Sorbet into my crease as a transition, then blended Detour a little lower and onto the outer corner. I thought I would need to add some of Top Down, but I ended up not using it at all. The crease already looked perfect with only two colors! Then I did a half cut crease using my Tarte Shape Tape (nothing new here!) and swatched some of the shimmers I loved to figure out what to do next.

My Way, Gridlock, Boozy & El Rey

I fell absolutely in love with the bright blue (Gridlock), so I knew I had to use that one on my lid! I also wanted to tie in one of the gold shades, which would complement the original transition color, so I put the orange-y gold (Boozy) on the innermost part of my lid. To finish the entire look, I put some of the light gold (El Rey) on my inner corner, and it all came together! You can see the fade from gold, to bright blue, to royal blue in the picture of my eye look.

Mar palette & Glam metallic lipstick

Okay. Now for my thoughts on the palette: I think it’s a no-brainer that I really love this one! It was easy to blend and all the colors compliment each other so well! The blues in the palette might not be the most wearable for an everyday type of look, but some of the browns and golds are more natural and soooo gorgeous! It can be a good palette to try if you’re in the mood to put some color on your eyes, and it’s super affordable!

Now I have a little extra part of my review to include. You might’ve noticed that I’m wearing two different lip colors in the pictures of my eyes, and that’s because I tried out a couple of lipsticks from ColourPop! I’ve used their typical Matte Liquid Lipsticks a million times before, and I love them, but I wanted to try a couple of new lip products and include them in my review of the palette.

First, I have Appy, which is a peachy-nude lipstick. It’s crazy pigmented and easy to throw on! I’ve been looking for a good nude lipstick for a long time, and I think I finally found it! The other lipstick I tried is a metallic called Glam. This is a shiny and bold rose gold color, and I love it! This one would look a lot better with a softer eye look, but I think it looks so cool anyway. Both of these lipsticks are awesome and I know I’ve just found two new favorites!

I hope you enjoyed reading my review on some of the new ColourPop products I finally got to try out! If you have any recommendations for products you think I should try, please let me know! I’m so happy with everything I tried out today, so I’d love to get ahold of even more amazing makeup!

Palette Review: 35O2 Second Nature by Morphe

Warm tones are for sure my favorite colors to use on my eyes, and this palette is almost all warm colors! I used a peach color as a transition, an orange and a bold red in the crease, and a darker brown-red on the outer corner. Then I cut the crease with concealer and put the gold shimmer over that area. I repeated pretty much the same steps on the lower lash line, minus the concealer, then added an inner corner and brow-bone highlight color from the Jaclyn Hill Palette (this one doesn’t really have any highlight colors). Overall, this palette was super easy to blend, has a ton of bold colors, and I absolutely love how the look turned out! I just wish they had at least one highlight color, but I have a ton of those so I’m not too mad about it. As for my lip color, I used a Revlon nude lipstick then threw a pink-gold shimmery eyeshadow from Jaclyn Hill on top to make it super glittery.
