Best of Makeup 2018

Last year was an insanely great one for makeup lovers! Between the much-needed expansion in foundation shades, to the tons of new palettes released, to some of the best collaborations, it was an amazing (and expensive!) year for everyone invested in the beauty industry. There has been so much makeup to try out and review that it can be a little overwhelming, but there is truly a product for everyone nowadays!

Personally, I have grown a lot in the last year with makeup. A year ago I never thought I would have a beauty blog, but now here I am! I spent the last half of 2018 trying to capture my creativity through eye looks, and teaching others about eye makeup and its application. I’ve learned a lot about makeup and what I love about it in the last year, which I reflected on in my previous post, “Why Do I Love Makeup?” I’ve gotten more confident in trying crazy colors on my eyes, as well as in doing makeup on other people. Last year was one to remember and appreciate, so to give a shoutout to 2018 I collected my ten favorite beauty products that I used all year. These are the staples in my makeup collection, the ones I can’t live without, and the products you’ll probably recognize from previous posts of mine!

1. Real Techniques Beauty Sponge

The most important parts of makeup application are the tools you use, so my first favorite product is obviously going to include my #1s. I’m obsessed with the Real Techniques Beauty Sponge because it makes foundation and concealer blend into your skin so effortlessly and naturally, without leaving streaks or patches. You can also use your sponge and a little loose powder to set your face, which is what I do most days to avoid shininess. In addition to this amazing little sponge, I’ve also been obsessed with the Real Techniques face brushes and decided they deserve an honorable mention.

2. Maybelline Superstay Foundation

I used this foundation for the majority of 2018 and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! It absolutely covers everything but still manages to look like real skin. I really believe this foundation is magic in a bottle and I’d recommend everyone to try it out! You can put a little bit onto your sponge and make it look super natural, but then add a little more and you have a true full-coverage foundation. This formula lives up to its name and it’s definitely one of the best drugstore foundations I’ve tried.

3. ColourPop Highlighter in “Flexitarian”

Just from glancing at the picture of this highlighter, I’m sure you can see how bright and shimmery this product is. I use this on my inner corner almost every time I do my eye makeup and I don’t think I’ll ever stop! It’s super easy to apply and blend into your skin as a face highlighter too. I’ve found that you can use a brush for a more natural highlight, but use your finger to get some crazy shimmer on your cheekbones. And for the price, this product just can’t be beat!

4. Morphe Setting Spray

I’ve been searching for the perfect setting spray since I started doing my makeup, but could never find one that was exactly what I wanted. Most setting sprays are harsh and leave water marks on your face, but this one will never do that. It comes in an aerosol can so that the product sprays your face evenly and gently, and it makes your makeup last forever!

5. Jaclyn Hill Palette by Morphe

It’s no secret that this palette is the most-used in my collection. You can tell just by looking at it that I use it like crazy! It’s the perfect palette for any type of look, whether you want a very neutral look or a pop of color. The shadows are extremely easy to blend and the shimmers are super pigmented. If you haven’t already tried this one out, I recommend you get around to purchasing it in 2019!

6. 25C Palette by Morphe

I might have a slight obsession with Morphe eyeshadows, but I’m sure that’s nothing new to you! I recently fell in love with this palette for it’s brown tones, but also found that I can’t stay away from the pops of color. I’m a huge fan of warm-toned eyeshadows in my everyday life and this palette catered to my needs big time. It has become one of my most-used, up there with the Jaclyn Hill palette.

7. Zulu Palette by Juvia’s Place

This. Palette. Wow! I hadn’t used many bright colors before I purchased this, but once I bought it I was drawn into the world of crazy eyeshadow looks. Almost every time I create a look incorporating some kind of crazy color, you can be sure that this palette was involved. I give all the credit to this palette for sparking my interest in colorful looks and I’m so happy that I found it!

8. Stila Magnificent Metals

It’s no question that these were the biggest trend of 2018. I’m not sure if I could name more than a few people in my life who haven’t tried these, and everyone who has loves them! With so many different color choices and varying levels of glitteriness, you just can’t stay away from these guys! Every time I want to do a fun look for going out, I pop one of these onto my lid and I’m ready to go. This is another one of those products that you just have to try; I promise you’ll love them!

9. NYX Glitters

Alright, so I’m obviously a glitter-addict. When I have a big event to go to, like a formal, I reach for these loose glitters. They’re beautiful and extremely easy to apply, and they last for the entire night. These take a little bit more effort and focus than the Stila Magnificent Metals, but they’re definitely worth it when the look is complete!

10. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Colors

I’ve tried a decent amount of lip products this year, but I still go back to the same one. The formula and color selection of these liquid lips are hard to beat, and they’re super affordable! I’ve been using these for years, but I really started to try tons of different shades throughout 2018. These are some of the best lipsticks on the market right now and I can’t wait to try even more colors!

This concludes my favorite products from 2018 and trust me when I recommend every single one of these. I tried out a lot of different products throughout the year, but these are the ones that I knew I couldn’t leave out. I’m so excited to try new products and improve my skills in the upcoming year, and to hopefully continue to teach all of you a little something about makeup. Thank you for supporting my blog in 2018, and thanks in advance for continuing to read and support in 2019! It’s going to be a great year for makeup!

My Take on a Rainbow Eye

I think I can guess what you’re thinking when you look at this makeup look: How? What? Why? I honestly never thought I would try something like this, but I sat down at my makeup desk one night and just attempted it. This look took a lot of time, so many different brushes, and all the concentration I could manage, but I’m so happy with the end result!

I started with my normal base, Tarte Shape Tape with a translucent powder over it, then began to blend a light orange-brown into my crease to make blending easier. To get this bold look started, I used the vibrant red color in my Morphe 35O2 palette on the innermost part of my eye. Then, I used the matte orange from the same palette, making sure to blend the two colors together. I then used a yellow shade and matte green from my Zulu palette by Juvia’s Place. I added a light blue from the Jaclyn Hill palette and a dark blue from the Mar palette by ColourPop. Finally, I used the dark purple from the Zulu palette on the outermost part of my eye. I went back in with a clean blending brush to soften the edges, and added more shadow where I needed the color to be more intense. As I always do, I repeated all the same steps on my bottom lash line, blending the outer corner with the colors on my lid. Since I knew I needed a little glitter, I put some of my NYX Glitter in Lumi-Lite on my inner corner, with the ColourPop Supershock Highlighter in Flexitarian underneath, as well as on my brow bone. I added a wing with my Stila Liquid Eyeliner, threw on a pair of Ardell Whispies, and finished with some black mascara.

I think the bold red lips really add to this look, so I wanted to mention this lipstick really quick. It’s a Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor, and I’m so obsessed with this formula! I own tons of the Revlon Lipcolors and I just can’t stop buying them! I’m wearing the shade Love, which you can get here. I love the look of a matte lipstick, especially with a crazy eyeshadow look like this, but it would also be so pretty with a gloss on top!

It’s extremely difficult to describe my specific process for creating this look by simply using words. I definitely simplified my process in this post, but I actually took over an hour to accomplish this eye makeup. The amount of times I would go back in with a color and blend it with the other colors was crazy, but I knew I would need to take a lot of time to accomplish something like this. It was a super complicated look, but I’m so happy and proud with how it turned out in the end! Attempting a look like this requires a lot of time and patience, but it’s so worth it in the end!

If you want to know the basics of how I do my eyeshadow, I have a step-by-step tutorial on a basic brown smokey eye with a shimmery lid right here! Doing My Mom’s Makeup: Super Glam

Recently, I’ve been interested in doing other people’s makeup, since I typically only do my own. I’ve done makeup on my younger sisters, my friends, and finally, my mom. She’s definitely the type of person to do her makeup in 10 minutes or less and doesn’t like to get all glammed up. But I decided to really go all out just to see what she’d look like, especially since she just got a new haircut and wanted her face to match her new ‘do. It was so much fun to see my mom transform and to try out some new products on her!

My mom is way more tan than I am, so finding a foundation that matched her, but still gave her the coverage I wanted, was pretty difficult. We settled on an Almay foundation that she has in her makeup bag. Then, I used my favorite concealer ever, Tarte Shape Tape, to conceal and brighten her face. She had never used concealer before, so she was impressed with how it emphasized her features and made her eyes look even brighter! I set her entire face with my Covergirl Professional Loose Powder right after, making sure to set her eyelids to prep for eyeshadow.

This lady definitely isn’t familiar with contour, but she really doesn’t need it. I decided to try it just to see how it looked, making sure I didn’t overdo it. I used the ELF Contour Palette on the hollows of her cheeks, her jawline, and her nose. Then, I bronzed her face with the Physicians Formula Bronzer in a darker shade than my own, since my typical bronzers would all be too light for her complexion. I used my favorite NYX Blush on her cheekbones, then tried the Laura Geller Highlighter in Gilded Honey on the high points of her face. She loved this stuff! Since the color looks dull on my fair skin tone, I decided it would be best for mom to keep it. I finished her base by using my NYX Tinted Brow Mascara in Blonde, since her eyebrows are similar in color to mine.

Now for the fun part: eyeshadow. Since we all know how much I love Morphe eyeshadows, I decided to use one of my favorite palettes on her eyes. I used the 35K Koffee Palette to do this look. I started with a peach-y mauve color for the transition, then blended a neutral brown into her crease. Since I wanted her eye makeup to be more on the dramatic side, I threw a darker brown into the outer corner, too. Then, I used the ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in Get Lucky on the inner half of her lid to add a little bit of glitter. She never (ever) wears eyeshadow, but I thought this looked so pretty! I finished off the eyes by repeating the same steps on the lower lash line, throwing on some mascara, then adding some Ardell Wispies for even more drama. I put some more of the Laura Geller highlighter on her inner corner, and it looked amazing!

To complete the entire look, I put a ColourPop Liquid Lipstick on, and it seriously looked so good with her skin tone! She even loved the lipstick, and (surprise!) it’s super rare to see any color on her lips!

Doing my mom’s makeup was so much fun, and seeing the rest of my family react to the crazy makeup she had was awesome! I’m happy my mom was so willing to let me put about a pound of makeup on her face, but I think she really enjoyed it, too! This just goes to prove that anyone can have fun with their makeup if they’re willing to try something new. I hope you love the look that I did on my mom because I’m so happy with how it turned out!

Palette Review: Mar by ColourPop

Before I tried the Mar palette, I had never tried a ColourPop eyeshadow palette or any of their pressed eyeshadows. I’ve heard tons of good things about their pressed shadows, but I had only ever tried their liquid lipsticks and their Super Shock Shadows. Mar was the new palette on the market and I was so excited to try it out! I normally go for warm-tones because they’re a lot more wearable, but I decided to step out of my comfort zone and get a palette that had a lot of blue and gold tones. This is the look that I came up with!

Mar palette & Appy lipstick

When I first saw the palette in person, I realized that there are only 3 matte shades: a peach (Sorbet), a dark brown (Top Down), and a royal blue (Detour). While this might seem limiting at first glance, I realized how many possibilities there are with only these mattes!

I started the look by blending Sorbet into my crease as a transition, then blended Detour a little lower and onto the outer corner. I thought I would need to add some of Top Down, but I ended up not using it at all. The crease already looked perfect with only two colors! Then I did a half cut crease using my Tarte Shape Tape (nothing new here!) and swatched some of the shimmers I loved to figure out what to do next.

My Way, Gridlock, Boozy & El Rey

I fell absolutely in love with the bright blue (Gridlock), so I knew I had to use that one on my lid! I also wanted to tie in one of the gold shades, which would complement the original transition color, so I put the orange-y gold (Boozy) on the innermost part of my lid. To finish the entire look, I put some of the light gold (El Rey) on my inner corner, and it all came together! You can see the fade from gold, to bright blue, to royal blue in the picture of my eye look.

Mar palette & Glam metallic lipstick

Okay. Now for my thoughts on the palette: I think it’s a no-brainer that I really love this one! It was easy to blend and all the colors compliment each other so well! The blues in the palette might not be the most wearable for an everyday type of look, but some of the browns and golds are more natural and soooo gorgeous! It can be a good palette to try if you’re in the mood to put some color on your eyes, and it’s super affordable!

Now I have a little extra part of my review to include. You might’ve noticed that I’m wearing two different lip colors in the pictures of my eyes, and that’s because I tried out a couple of lipsticks from ColourPop! I’ve used their typical Matte Liquid Lipsticks a million times before, and I love them, but I wanted to try a couple of new lip products and include them in my review of the palette.

First, I have Appy, which is a peachy-nude lipstick. It’s crazy pigmented and easy to throw on! I’ve been looking for a good nude lipstick for a long time, and I think I finally found it! The other lipstick I tried is a metallic called Glam. This is a shiny and bold rose gold color, and I love it! This one would look a lot better with a softer eye look, but I think it looks so cool anyway. Both of these lipsticks are awesome and I know I’ve just found two new favorites!

I hope you enjoyed reading my review on some of the new ColourPop products I finally got to try out! If you have any recommendations for products you think I should try, please let me know! I’m so happy with everything I tried out today, so I’d love to get ahold of even more amazing makeup!

New Products of the Month: July 2018

Towards the end of summer I had a little extra money to spend, so of course I chose to spend it on new makeup! There were some products that I was so excited to try, so I went to Ulta and picked up some new stuff! I also ordered two palettes off of the Morphe website, and they are drop-dead gorgeous!

These were two palettes that I had been eyeballing for a while, so when they arrived I was so excited! I sat down and did a simple eye look using the 25C palette, which I’ll show you here!

Products Used: Morphe 25C Hey Girl Hey Palette, Stila Glitter & Glow in Rose Gold Retro

I decided not to spend all the money I saved over the summer on makeup, but I definitely did some damage this month. I bought the NYX Matte Lipstick in Whipped Caviar because I have another shade of this lipstick and I LOVE the formula! Of course I had to buy a couple more of the NYX Metallic Glitters while I was there, so I got Rose and Lumi-Lite. Then, because a girl can never have enough glitter, I also picked up the Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow in Rose Gold Retro. I’ve tried a couple of these and they’re amazing! Finally, I picked up a couple Revlon lip products. They have amazing lipsticks and liquid lipsticks, so I wanted to try some new colors. I got the Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in Flirtation and the Electric Shock Lip Lacquer in Ruby Flash. Both are beautiful colors and I’m so excited to try them out with different eye looks!

That’s all the new makeup I bought in July! Please leave me a comment telling me whether or not you want me to update you on how these products work for me throughout the next month!
